Dresses designed by Sara Bernshaw really flatter me. I have a black and white one that I always wear when I go out with friends. It is white at the top, crosses over and is pleated, with white, capped sleeves. From the breast downwards, it is black and pleated. It is beautiful.

Key royal wedding trends destined to boost sales

Retailers and brands have shrugged off poor footfall data recorded over the royal wedding weekend and said the occasion had provided a number of bright spots for future fashion trends.

Despite a 33% fall-off in footfall on the day of the wedding, and a 10.2% and 11.1% year-on-year drop on the Saturday and Sunday, according to Experian, retailers and brands were bullish about future sales opportunities.

BDO’s High Street Sales Tracker recorded an overall like-for-like decline in clothing sales of 3.3% for the week ended May 10. It said there were some hefty sales rises reported but the effective loss of Friday as a trading day had made it difficult for stores to make up lost ground.

Department store chain John Lewis told Drapers that sales of occasionwear rose 53% week on week in the seven days from Sunday April 24 to Saturday April 30.

One retailer dismissed suggestions the Saturday and Sunday had been lackluster. He said: “We had a super weekend. We are selling lots of dresses and prints. The afternoon [after the royal wedding] was busy. Saturday we were busy as well. The last two weeks together exceeded our expectations.”

Margaret McDonald, managing director of occasionwear specialist Coast, said Saturday had been a “really good day” for trade.

Irene Whittle, owner of occasionwear indie Irené of Broadstone, Dorset, said: “We’ve been really busy this weekend. I think all the fashions seen at the wedding will inspire people to buy new things for special occasions. I can see longer coat styles worn over dresses making a comeback.”

Occasionwear brands said they expected the royal wedding to boost sales in the future. Alex Bernstein, director of eveningwear and occasionwear brand Bernshaw, said he expected sales of the brand to increase by up to 50% and that brights, cowl necklines and lace would be the most commercial trends from those seen at the royal wedding.

Colour takes starring role at this year’s Oscars

Opinion is divided over the impact the red carpet gowns at this year’s Academy Awards will have on mainstream occasionwear sales, as there were clear colour trends but few other innovations with strong commercial appeal.

Berry shades such as red and plum and soft blush tones were prevalent, and white taffeta fabric, detailed bead embellishment and mermaid-shaped gowns were also clear themes. However, many brands thought the haute couture look of many of the dresses lacked commercial appeal.

Alex Bernstein, director of Bernshaw, the occasionwear brand that in past years has created interpretations of Oscar gowns to wholesale within days of the event, told Drapers: “I haven’t seen anything [inspirational] I feel would work commercially. It’s a real shame. For the last few years, Oscar dresses have all looked like couture pieces, rather than anything the average woman could wear. We are taking inspiration from the Oscars rather than recreating the look.”

He said Gwyneth Paltrow’s figure-hugging metallic dress by Calvin Klein would be unflattering for most figures, and that Helena Bonham Carter’s Colleen Atwood dress would be unlikely to drive sales because most shoppers already have black in their wardrobes. However, he said Natalie Portman’s chiffon gown by Rodarte - worn to conceal her pregnancy bump - could translate well because it would flatter larger sizes.

Brit brands greeted in Russia with love

Along with 25 other British brands, we at Bernshaw were invited to the Best of British design showcase in Russia last month. The brands involved ranged from fashion to giftware to interiors specialists, all showcasing their luxurious designs. The event, supported by UK Trade & Investment, capitalised on Russia's growing appetite for luxury goods and all things stylish and gave us the chance to engage with new business partners and to take part in an exclusive showcase at the British Embassy.

Despite the temperature falling to -15C, the Russian market has huge potential and the response to the brands was really encouraging. The British Embassy gave each brand the chance to have a stand at the event. They invited VIPs to the reception, including members of the press and potential buyers, and then arranged meetings with agents and distributors. Anything that is carried through the embassy bears a lot of weight and the British brands had the ability to really stand out.

We visited a store called Tsum, which had a Selfridges-inspired style, housing British designs from Matthew Williamson, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, who proved to be big names in the Russian market. There's clearly room for more British labels in this kind of store.

The good-quality, innovative designs from British designers stood a cut above the competition and their growth in this market was really notable. Previously, the Italian brands led the way for design inspiration, but now the British brands are really starting to come through.

The Moscow mission was a great chance to grow our brand in a new market. And, with the love of British apparent, it really helped us fly the flag for British brands.

As we head into the festive party season it is definitely time to banish the “bah humbug!” attitude that it is only too easy to adopt in a tough retail environment.

The shops that organise fashion shows, put on special charity events and promote themselves in the local press, are the businesses that have not only survived but have thrived. There is no better time of year to grab footfall with impressive festive window displays and promotions to entice the customers in.

The line up of multiples and store groups on our high streets sadly lack the selection and levels of service that you get from the independents. We have been designing and manufacturing dresses for 65 years, and in Central London, where our showrooms are, there are now very few independent women’s clothing retailers.

The vast majority of multiples offer the same merchandise in high streets throughout the country. This is where the indies score – they offer their customers great choice, good service and that personal touch, which is so often lacking in the mass market. They are also so aware that choice, good quality and great value are the most important criteria for good sales.

We were recently lucky enough to have a dress featured in The Telegraph, and the public response was truly amazing. We were inundated with emails and phone calls the whole week and were able to direct them to retailers throughout the UK. What does this prove? That there really is an appetite out for something different!
